Dear Friends,

JAI Hind!

Subject: PAKISTAN DISOWNS HISTORY.

We are aware that history is a hard task master and never forgives those who do not know that their history. This has been often said about India but in the edit page article of the Statesman of March 9, 2017, we are surprised to read, “PAKISTAN DISOWNS HISTORY”. Will history forgive Pakistan for disowning its history?

The writer Bhopinder Singh takes us to, “the land of mystics, wanderers and poets like Abdul Latif Bhittal, Manjhi Faqueer, sachal sarmast and of the sufi sites like the holy shrine of the great sufi patron saint hazrat lal shahbaz qalander, has been brutally convulsed by the new reality of a terror-inspired, retrograde and increasingly intolerant Pakistan, which is at war with its own history, ethos and instincts. Pakistan must first learn to celebrate its own true history, vivid diversity and rich culture and not suffer from any inferiority complex”. That means this is a new world and not the usually history of Pakistan that continues to have bad to worse relationship with India.

Some of the examples quoted by the author are like Sindh’s fabled spirit of ‘inclusivity’ that included the acceptance of Mohajirs (Muslim who had migrated from India to Pakistan after the partition). Or the Ahmadiyyas, Christian and Zoroastrain faiths which welcomed the presence of Sufis. Therefore, the writer says, “A major problem in Pakistan are the dangerous untruths of history”.

He continued, “Pakistan is posited at the virtual crossroad of making a choice between the original syncretic and profound moorings of its vibrant history, and that of the intolerant strains injected by its recent Arab benefactors who summarily declare all non-adherents as Takfir (apostates) and Kafirs (non-believers), hence justifying the violent means of expressing dissent against them”.

Well, Friends, Bhopindra Singh has, therefore, reminded us of the famous song, Dama Dum Mast Qalandar. Pakistan has, therefore, to reconcile with his own past and as Bhopinder Singh concluded, “Pakistan must first learn to celebrate its own true history, vivid diversity and rich culture and not suffer from any inferiority complex, as that aids the facilitation of alien sensibility and their brutal implications.

We are, indeed, grateful to Shri Bhopinder Singh for having taken us away from the nauseating Indo-Pakistan history of fight and fight and fight. Thank you Bhopinder for this!
