Subject: Women’s Role In Jihad—Serious Security Implications
We are aware of female jihadists and even of female fidayeens (suicide bombers). Now we see a brief press report that quotes from a 7-page leaflet from one of the wives of the Al Qaeda Chief, written as early as in 2012.
Let us read the entire report (Hindustan Times), November 15, 2014) which is brief:
New read: Women’s role in jihad, by Zawahri wife

KOLKATA: West Bengal intelligence officials have found a leaflet written by al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahri’s wife highlighting how women can serve the cause of jihad, authorities told HT on Friday.
The seven-page leaflet, written by Umaima Hassan Ahmed Mohammed Hassan, one of alZawahri’s wives, was released in 2012 and circulated in West Asian countries where al-Qaeda has strong networks before finding its way to Bangladesh, West Bengal and Assam.
Titled “A letter to my Muslim sisters”, the note was translated into Bangla by Ansarrullah Bangla Team, a forum in Bangladesh with links to al-Qaeda.
Bangladesh’s information minister Hasanul Haque Inu said, “We have information about the Ansarullah team. We will inquire in details but The circulation of this letter shows a well organised international network operating in this region (Indo-Bangla border)”.
West Bengal intelligence officials said the letter, a copy of which is with HT, gives an idea of women’s role in militant activities.
The leaflet advises women to help their husbands and brothers in fulfilling their jihadi duties, and raise male children with jihadi ideas. Among other topics, the leaflet also says that all Muslim women must defend the hijab and warns that any movement against the hijab is the first step towards de-Islamisation.
Well, friends, the significant portions in it have been highlighted. The call to women to help their brothers and husbands in fulfilling their jihadi duties is indeed the crux of the matter. History is replete with instances universally that the victory or loss in freedom or freedom-looking struggles often depends upon the intensity or the quality of involvement of the women folk in the movement. After all, let us not forget that they, apart from being gifted with the proverbial sixth sense, the women folk form almost 50 percent of the overall population.
In the context of the excitement caused in some parts of India following the unilateral declaration of the Caliphate by the SIMI, followed by the Al Qaeda declaring West Bengal as their Caliphate and India’s inclusion in their arc of attention as well as the physical evidence coming out post-Burdwan blast of October 2, 2014, the appeal to all Muslim women to stand by the brothers and husbands in their jihad cannot be just taken as a mere press report and may have to be taken more seriously and suitably pursued. To succeed in changing mental orientation or in brain-washing is more important than imparting physical training/arming with necessary wherewithals
Well, friends, the task is indeed too big to be left to the government alone. People like you and me must also do our best to detect any possible manifestation of the danger on the ground any where in the country. It ought to be taken, as we humbly feel, as the aphorism, “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty”.
