Taking the propaganda against Homosexuality one step further, Joint Secretary of RSS or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Mr Dattatreya Hosaballe declared Homosexuality to be a psychological ailment.
Expressing himself in front of the media, Mr Hosaballe tweeted, “Homosexuality is not a crime, but socially immoral act in our society. No need to punish, but to be treated as a psychological case.” This comment was indicated as a change according to the modern times. He further stated that the party doesn’t have any opinion of Homosexuality. However, he maintains that Gay marriage is institutionalization of Homosexuality and hence should be prohibited.
With RSS largely influencing a lot of decisions of the ruling party BJP, these comments were issued only days after Lok Sabha rejected the bill submitted by the Congress leader Sashi Tharoor for decriminalizing Homosexuality. This is the second time this bill has been defeated in the Lok sabha.
RSS in the past-
RSS has always made it clear that the values of Indian society are supreme for them and many times RSS has been seen ‘defining’ the social norms, especially in its mother state of Maharashtra. Since last few years the party has strongly opposed Homosexuality and Live-in relationships, sighting these as immoral acts. Many activities of its leaders have thrown bad light on the group’s reputation. Harassing unmarried couples and opposition of Valentine’s day are a few of them.
The Indian Scenario
With the Gay rights movement getting stronger all around the world, India still remains one of the 70 countries where Homosexuality is illegal. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code makes it illegal for members of same sex to have a relationship, not abiding by which can lead to maximum of 10 years in Jail.
The battle for making homosexuality legal remains to be hard to win. With a major proportion of society in favour of it, however the political debate over the topic never seems to be over.
