The victims had gone to their native town to celebrate Diwali and Bhai dooj. The injured duo are reportedly out of danger now.
Three persons died and two others were left injured at Khandeshwar on Wednesday morning, when a car rammed into a trailer . The accident took place at around 5.15 am near Asud village on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
According to the police, Shirish Jadhav (21), Sheilesh Jadhav (22), Dhananjay Jadhav (21), all residents of Koregaon in Satara; Mahesh More (26), a resident of Dombivli and Kailash Jadhav (21), a resident of Koparkhairane, were coming to Mumbai from Satara in a Xylo car late on Tuesday night.
As they crossed Asud village in Khandeshwar, their car rammed into a trailer ahead of them.
Shirish, Sheilesh and Dhananjay, suffered severe injuries at various parts of their bodies and they died on the spot. The driver Mahesh and his friend Kailash suffered injuries and they were admitted to MGM hospital in Kalamboli.
The deceased were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were announced dead on arrival. Mahesh and Kailash are now reportedly out of danger.
“The deceased worked with some private company in Navi Mumbai and they had gone to their native place for Diwali and Bhai dooj. They had reportedly come in contact with Mahesh and Kailash through one of their common friends. It is however, not clear whether they hired the car or Mahesh and Kailash accompanied them on their own,” said Jonardan Thorat, senior police inspector of Khandeshwar police station.
“Initial investigation revealed that the trailer, which was coming ahead of the Xylo car, changed its track all of a sudden without any prior indication. The Xylo driver, Mahesh, then lost his control over his car and hit the trailer from rear. The trailer driver fled the spot leaving behind the vehicle and we are now searching for him. We hope to get hold of them within a short span of time,” said another police officer from Khandeshwar police station.
The police sent the bodies of the deceased Panvel rural hospital for postmortem and then handed them over to their respective families. “The postmortem reports are yet to come. We have not found any trace of drunk driving in the case,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the police have registered a case under section 304A of Indian Penal Code against the trailer driver.
