7 Hindu houses torched in Bangladesh

According to a fire service official, the fire causes an estimated loss of Tk4 lakh

Miscreants set at least seven houses of Hindu community on fire at Uttar Dhemsha union of Satkania upazila in Chittagong early Friday.

No casualty was reported in this regard while police could not find out clue behind the sabotage till filing this report, said Md Khaled Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkania police station.

Police are looking into the matter, he added.

The OC said that none lodged any complaint with the police station in this connection.

Local and police sources said some miscreants torched the houses, owned by Amal Das, Nirmal Das, Sumir Das, Amar Das, Narayan Das, Haradhan Das and Dipak Das, of Muhuri Bari at the area at around 2am.

Palash Sen, a local of the area, said five families did not live in the houses while the rest two lived there.

A resident of the houses had cast his vote in the recently passed national election, he added.

“Miscreants have set the houses of minority people on fire at different parts of the country in the recent period as a reprisal to casting vote, however, we are not sure either the incident was a similar one or not,” he added.

Mohammad Shahadat, station officer of Satkania fire station, said the fire fighters extinguished the fire within one and half an hour at around 2:45am.

The fire caused an estimated loss of Tk4 lakh, he said.
