Delhi prepares to celebrate Diwali

New Delhi: Delhi residents did some last minute shopping and women drew exquisite rangolis as the national capital readied to celebrate Diwali. Enthusiastic children burst firecrackers in the morning.

Price rise was not a dampener as people thronged markets and sweet shops.

“The sales are almost like that of previous Diwali. We expected that price rise will tighten the purse strings of people but this was not the case. In fact, sales seem to be increasing,” said Rajesh Arora, owner of a general store in Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi.

There were no reports of traffic snarls yet in the morning as people headed to neighbourhood markets that were brimming gifts and decorative items.

Kamini Arora, 38, a working woman and mother of two, was busy in choosing various shaped earthen lamps since she prefers traditional lights over electric ones.

“I could not shop much as I was working till yesterday (Saturday)…,” Arora said.

Delhi Police and the fire department made elaborate arrangements to ensure an accident free Diwali.

The festival of lights marks the triumph of good over evil.
