LUDHIANA: A ‘Jila Pracharak’ (district-level preacher) of a Hindu organisation died after two motorcycle-borne miscreants fired at him around 150 meter away from Durga Temple near Rakh Bagh on Saturday evening.
The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Amit Sharma of Old city who was Prachar Mantri of Hindu Takht.
Police officials said that Amit Sharma, who was appointed as District Pracharak of Hindu Takhat about two months ago, had come to meet his friend, who owns a flower shop near Durga Mata Temple on Saturday evening. They added that Amit had parked his white Fiat Punto vehicle near the gate of a residential area close to the temple and gone to his friend’s shop.
Cops said that while returning at around 8.30 pm on Saturday, he was about to board his vehicle when two unmasked men on an Enfield bike shot four bullets from 7.65 pistol at him.
They added that Amit got four bullet injuries in his back and died on the spot after falling on the road.
An area resident Raman Sood said that though there are CCTVs installed at the gate of the colony but their reach is not upto the spot where the incident happened.
Police officials said that there was darkness at the spot where the incident happened which might make it difficult for police to identify the miscreants.
Ludhiana Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh who visited the spot said that they are investigating the case thoroughly. He added that the deceased used to come to meet his friend, who owned flower shop in the area, frequently.
In the meanwhile facebook profile of the deceased suggests that he was with Congress party as well and had written his designation as Vice President of District Congress Committee Ludhiana (Urban).
Meanwhile members of Hindu groups including Praveen Dang and others reached the spot after word spread about the incident. They also had gathered at Civil Hospital where the dead body of the deceased was shifted by police.
