Indian MEA in touch with Bangladesh Govt over attacks on Hindus

New Delhi: External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin has said that the government was in “touch with Bangladesh over reports of attacks on Hindus during and after the general election there.”

Lawyer activist and founder of the All India Muslim Agenda 2014, Shehzad Poonawalla had submitted a memorandum to the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi along with the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of External Affairs to highlight the plight of the minority Hindu community being persecuted in Bangladesh allegedly by the activists of the Jamat e Islami and BNP, particularly after 5th January polls.

MEA spokesperson said in response that the Indian government was aware of the reports of attacks on minorities in the past few days. It said that the Bangladesh home ministry had ordered police to provide security to religious minorities and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sworn in Sunday, “has promised strong action against the culprits”.
