The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a sit-in and a road blockade near Clock Tower here on Monday to protest against the uploading of obscene pictures of a college student on social media networking sites allegedly by her lover, and increasing atrocities on women students.

Speaking on the occasion, Shishir H.P., convener of district unit of the ABVP, said that incidents of atrocities on women students were increasing in Udupi district.

He alleged that the obscene pictures were uploaded on social networking sites with the intention of blackmailing her. The Deralakatte incident in Mangalore, where two medical students were forced to perform sexual acts by a gang of extortionists was another example. Narcotic substances were being supplied to some college campuses.

The police department should investigate these cases without bias and take proper legal action against the culprits.

The authorities should take action to see that such incidents did not occur again in the district. If such incidents took place in the future, the ABVP would not hesitate to launch a massive agitation, Mr. Shishir said.

Students dispersed

The police dispersed a group of students near MGM College-V.B. College Junction on Monday. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Prabhudev B. Mane, after the “rasta roko” at Clock Tower, a group of students which returned from the protest, confronted another group of students which did not participate in it.

There was a quarrel between the two groups. The first group then blocked the road for about 10 minutes. The police then rushed to the spot and dispersed them, he said.
