GUWAHATI : In a major success, the Chirang police have busted a Jihadi training module and arrested three trainees with several incriminating items on Wednesday evening.

The three cadres were identified as Minarul Islam, Johrul Haque and Badiur Zamal Sheikh. Though police are yet to reveal the name of their outfit, they confirmed that the men were part of a Muslim fundamentalist group. Investigation revealed the three men were part of a training camp at Daukhanagar in Dhaligaon from September 7.

A senior police official said, “At least nine persons from Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Nalbari and Kokrajhar were undergoing training at the residence of a man identified as Iman Ali. A dormitory was also built in the house for these men. Though we did not find any firearms, camouflage caps and bags were seized.”

Police said the arrested men were part of a batch which was given the responsibility to hire cadres for the group in lower Assam districts. The men have told police that they were trying to organize a group to defend Muslim people from various atrocities. A source said one Ashique alias Burabhai of Howly area in Barpeta district and Mofiz were behind setting up the training module. “There are surely more such modules active in the state. We have already launched an operation,” the source added.

The arrest of the trio has led the state police to issue a fresh alert in several districts against Muslim fundamentalist groups.
