Jubilant Celebrations in Toronto mark BJP Victory and Narendra Modi as Prime Minister in India
Amidst loud cheer and beating of drums, over 600 members and supporters of the Overseas Friends of the BJP (OFBJP) Canada, Toronto, celebrated the welldeserved BJP victory in the leadership of President Sh Raj Nath Singh and Narendra Modi as PM candidate on May 19 at the packed hall of the Srinegri Temple here. The celebrations began with the lighting of traditional lamp by the priests from Sringeri temple and chanting of Vedic Mantras. The program was co-hosted by Mr. Anil Shringi and Ms Vrinda Atrey with celebratory music by Geetanjali group. The people were excited and seen jumping and dancing with joy adding to the celebrations.
The Convener OFBJP Canada Toronto Dr. Azad Kaushik welcomed the change for the better in India, towards the glory and wonder India was, that gives hope to over billion people for better life in India and restores the esteem of Indian diaspora around the world. People rejoiced the end of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty where OFBJP Canada Toronto members, Naresh Chavda, Naresh Patel, were applauded for their dedicated contributions. The chapter leaders, Kaushikbhai Patel, Parth Pandya, Bharat Kapoor, Brahmbhatt, Tarun Khanna, Khanjan Patel, Shilpaben, Sonalben and Jyoti Mehta were honored with a pin and scarf.
Pankaj Dave called it a victory for India and the world. He now hoped for dual citizenship for people of Indian origin while Co-founder of Canada-India Foundation Ajit Someshwar reiterated “abolition of Article 370” in the
Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, from where Pandits were forced out and made refugees in their own homeland. Anil Shringi said the task of building India begins now. Sardar Beant Singh Dhaliwal, President of Akali Dal Canada called it a victory of the people in celebration of democracy. Praful Lakhani of ‘Modi for PM’ who returned from India spoke about the untiring contributions of the Indian diaspora in the elections. The leadership of sister organizations, Krishna Shastri and Srinivas Velma, could not but express their excitement for a ‘New India’. The businessman Ramesh Chotai had lobbied in favor of Narendra Modi earlier, and managed to influence several Canadian federal ministers, MPs and other dignitaries to visit Gujarat when the opening of the Canadian Trade Office in Ahemadabad was announced. Last year, Canada was the partner country in “Vibrant Gujarat” summit.
Indian Consul General Akhilesh Mishra emphasized the significance of the election where of 820 million, 550-million actually voted requiring setting up

a million polling stations in the country. That speaks well of India, of India’s democratic institutions. It was an “unprecedented electoral process in the world,” that NRIs and Indian diaspora must be proud of. Indian Consul-General Akhilesh Mishra stated, “I am so delighted to join you here to be part of successful and peaceful conclusion of election in India.” “This is the first time in 25 years that a single party has got majority in the Lok Sabha. And it is the first time that a person, with a humble and modest background, born after independence, has been elected Prime Minister of India,” the Consul-General stated with repeated applause from the crowd.
The highlight of the event was direct telephonic address of learned leader Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi from New Delhi who applauded contributions of Indian diaspora, especially Canadians of Indian origin, in creating bonds among Indian and Canadian people and enhance people-to-people contact. Dr. Joshi spoke about the Vajpayee era when India progressed in all areas including space, infrastructure and technology and assured that a new India will emerge in 21st century and take it back to its glorious heights. The young dynamic Co-Convener Amit Thaker in his address from Ahmedabad congratulated the Canadians of Indian origin for their contributions to recently held elections and promised them all support for investment and trade with India.
The event was attended by Mr. Tony Milone (Ontario PC Etobicoke North) and Mr. John Anga (Etobicoke) who expressed their joy by offering flowers to Dr. Azad Kaushik. People said good bye to partisan and communal politics, blatant corruption and dynastic politics where one could not identify oneself as Hindu for fear of being called a “communal” that plagued India. India is now in for free enterprise and trade where outpouring of energy of people and entrepreneurship will flourish.

BJP victory celebration in Ottawa

Overseas friends of BJP in Ottawa celebrated the historic win of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) as the nationalist party scored a landslide victory over the ruling Congress Party. This is the first time in last 25 years a single party has won a clear majority. The scale of Narendra Modi’s (prime miniter-‐elect) victory is stunning considering that the Congress Party has ruled India for most of the past since India’s independence in 1947. Mr. Modi believes in meritocracy and is known to be a decisive leader who has led BJP to a victory on a scale which the party has never seen before. Mr. Modi ran on the platform that promised to deliver development after years of corruption und the Congress led coalition government. The Indian electorate were fed up with the lack of progress and development in India. Modi’s victory brings hope to all the young unemployed Indians who are looking to Modi to kick start the economy that will provide jobs and bring prosperity to Indians. There are extremely high expectations and the big question is will Modi be able to live up to these high expectations. The Indian electorates are very hopeful based on his past track record of being able to grow the state of Gujarat at the rate of 11% for number of years. The recent increase in the Mumbai stock exchange echoed this sentiment as well. The business community expects that Modi will be able to motivate government employees; clear road blocks in the approval of infrastructure projects and help get the machinery of government moving again.
The overseas friends of BJP (OFBJP) Ottawa chapter are very excited about this victory and hoping that Modi can bring the change that is needed to realize the immense potential that India has. Number of members of the OFBJP Ottawa chapter contributed to the win of BJP in their own way by calling their relatives and friends in India by encouraging them to vote for BJP, some members even went to India to directly canvas for the BJP in India. Shiv Bhasker, President of the Ottawa OFBJP, said the world’s largest democracy has voted in unprecedented numbers for dramatic change and echoed what Modi had said that “India has won” and “achai din anai walai hain” (good days are coming). He further added that it is now up to BJP to deliver on their manifesto of development, anti-‐corruption and appeasement to none. The large gathering at his house danced to celebrate the landslide BJP victory. The party was very well attended with over 40 people in attendance and all the executives of the OFBJP Ottawa chapter were present namely Atul Kumar (vice-‐president), Kul Kapoor
(Treasur), Dr. Ashok Kumar (public relations) and number of members at large and well-‐wishers of the BJP.
