Dear Friends,

JAI Hind!

Subject: Christianisation Of North-East India

Many of you would be aware of the rapid spread of Christianity in India and especially in the North Eastern parts of the country. And, we learn this has been a post-independence development.

Let us at the outset mention, we are not against Christianity as such. We have good friends among the Christians. But, the cold facts of history are:

1)  It is known that the Churches are the holder of the largest landed property in the country.

2)  In more than one way, Christianity in India is the gift of Pandit Nehru to India.

3)  The Christians In India are all converted people and the major chunk of them are from the tribals and from areas difficult to reach. The records in the IB will certify that.

4)  Pope in his visit to India in 2009 had said they had a specially self-imposed task to propagate Christianity in India.

5)  The majority among the Indian Christians do not change their names after conversion. The classical example is M R Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. And, on top of that he propagated Christianity beyond any reasonable or rather responsible degree.

6)  The government of India cannot intercede in the matter because of   the fundamental right of freedom of religion, guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.

Well, we have stated Christianity in the N E is the gift of Nehru. He gave full freedom to Rev. Michael Scott of the Baptist Church, Anyone knowing about will know the influence of the Baptist Church in that State.

The report of the Chennai-based The Centre for Policy Studies No XXVIII also brings out that Sikkim, which is  now included in the N E. Council and thus making it the eighth State in place of earlier seven sisters of the N, E. India, has witnessed rapid expansion of Christianity since. 1971.

The report of the Centre points out “The history and timing of Christianisation of the Northeast indicates that administrative, political and strategic impulses have played a large role in this phenomenon”.

The Chart below on Christians in the Northeast, 1901-2011 shows clearly that from 0.83 percent in 1901, the Christians in the Northeast grew to 16.94, which is phenomenal.

Christians in the Northeast, 1901-2011
  Population Christians %C
1901 42,71,978 35,434 0.83
1911 50,58,699 65,555 1.30
1921 60,05,043 1,32,778 2.21
1931 71,72,512 2,49,583 3.48
1941 86,18,116 64,766 0.75
1951 1,02,60,371 6,59,115 6.42
1961 1,41,64,014 11,22,223 7.92
1971 1,91,14,785 17,82,172 9.32
1981 2,41,19,765 27,19,430 11.27
1991 3,06,82,756 42,12,882 13.73
2001 3,73,46,058 61,38,507 16.44
2011 4,37,77,884 74,13,801 16.94

The Study of the Centre concludes, “Christianisation of the Northeast seems to be at least partly, if not largely, a result of political and strategic considerations. IT CERTAINY IS NOT ENTIRELY RELIGIOUS PHNOMENON”.

Well, Friends, there are significant security implications to the phenomenon of Christianisation of the Northeast.

  1. a) Tribal insurgency in this Christian dominated region, aided  by the State governments and as also by China is not good.
  2. b) China has not only been helping them with money but are also fomenting this tribal insurgency with arms and ammunition.
  3. c) There were reports that China even guided india inurgent groups along the unfriendly Burmese territory.
