Chennai: The ancient Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, Srirangam, near Tiruchy, which is among the 108 Divya Desams, shines majestically with its grandeur restored. The effect of the massive renovation work taken up by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) department is visible. The temple, where Lord Vishnu graces his devotees in a reclining posture, has been illuminated ahead of the Maha Samprokshanam on September 9.
The temple authorities have made all arrangements for the Yaga Sala puja at the 1,000-pillared mandapam. The Yaga Sala poojas for the Maha Samprokshanam will commence on September 7 and the consecration of 49 small shrines and 11 gopurams (temple towers) would take place between 5.40 am and 6.40 am on September 9. The Samprokshanam for the shrines of the main deities and remaining gopurams will be performed at a date to be announced later. Several satellite channels have arranged live telecast of the grand event.
According to sources, the renovation carried out for Rs 18 crore ensured the restoration of the original sheen of the temple, its gopurams and the rajagopuram. The thick layer of soot that had gathered on the walls and ceilings of the Garuda mandapam, Renga Vilas mandapam, and Kambathadi mandapam were removed through water wash and the authorities gave a facelift to the gigantic doors at various shrines, including the Thayaar Sannidhi, Vellai Gopuram, Renga Renga Gopuram, Nazhikettan vassal and ParamapadaVasal.
