Subject: Figures Of Religious Break-up Indian Population According To 2011 Census

Manyabar Griha Mantriji,

We are again before you with the same issue, as mentioned in the title. Our last mail sent on April 13, 2015, clearly explained our anxiety and open apprehension of possible manipulation in the matter of the religious break-up of the Indian population in the Census concluded in 2011 and today is April 30, 2015. The relevant portion from that mail is reproduced for bringing home the point, rather bluntly.

Manyabar, no one with senses will accept that in these days of advanced IT technology, it can take as much time as your Ministry has been taking in “finalising” and releasing the required data. It was in the public domain a few days ago that the office of the Registrar General/MHA was to make a presentation on this issue before the honourable Prime Minister before the release of the data.

Mahoday, that cannot hold back releasing the required data. As we understand, the UPA government was apprehensive that the release of the relevant data, showing vast increase in Muslim population would have adversely affected the majority community in the run-up to the general elections in May, 2014, and hence, they were not keen on releasing the same. But, we apprehend the new data will show vast decline in the number of the majority community. We base our apprehension both on what has actually been happening on the ground as also the findings of the Year Book of the Encyclopedia Britannica, 2013, generally accepted as responsible. We have already brought that information to your and the Registrar General of Census’ notice, showing the percentage of the Hindu population having gone down to something like 70.4 percent. And, these figures of the Encyclopedia stand unchallenged even on date.

So, the dilemma in India is: how to show that the number of the majority community has not gone down as sharply, as apprehended or has actually happened. Or, the other way: how to show that the percentage of the minority Muslim community has shot up more than what is/had been anticipated.

Mahoday, to us outside the government, it could only be attempted manipulation for political purposes. Sir, that is why we had further said, Be that as it may, we would urge you to clear the air at the earliest but without recourse to any devious means, as had been done in respect of the Census figures of 2001, finally released after four years. Mohaday, we are mentally prepared for the shock and so, we would urge you to ensure no fudging of records is resorted to at any stage. That would be betraying the trust the people have reposed on the present popular nationalist government and will not be accepted.

Sir, as far as we can read the ground situation, the popularity index of the present elected government, despite being led by as charismatic leader as Modiji, is already in the descending order. At this stage, any indication of indulgence in irregular tactics in dealing with this highly sensitive matter, particularly from the communal angle, will definitely be a serious cause for anxiety for the law and order authorities. As it is said, being forewarned is being forearmed. It is indeed such case, as it looks now.

So, Sir, we urge you to please clarify the air in this respect as early as possible. At least, let the countrymen know what the truth is.

Sir, we beg to be excused if we have sounded rather blunt in our submission.

Yours sincerely,

D.C. Nath
