January 30, 2015

Dear Friends,

Subject: Paris And Nigeria—The Differential Between

We are before you today with the starkly bad side of human character in us, as so bluntly reflected in the case the Paris event of January 7, 2015 and the ongoing saga utter human brutality being on display for quite some time in Nigeria that seems to have been forsaken by even the Lord Almighty.

You have to only go through the attached second Editorial in “The Statesman” of January 26, 2015. As it starts:

“The world has monitored Paris, but not Nigeria. While the killing of 17 people in an Islamist attack on the French satirical weekly, Charlie Hebdo, stirred the conscience of the comity of nations, a swathe of Africa has suffered a carnage virtually unnoticed. This is not to draw a distinction between Europe and the “dark continent’; only to underline that the international outcry over Paris has somehow overshadowed the killing in parallel of an estimated 2000 people in Nigeria’s Baga town by the Boko Haram, as murderously fundamentalist as the ISIS.”

Coming to crude details, the Editorial carried on: “The killing and kidnapping of girls in search of learning has, for the past year, been a distressing feature of life in this prosperous part of Africa. But the recent massacre has been one of the worst in modern times. The aversion to learning is the strand that binds the Islamist threat from Peshawar to Baga. If it is the Taliban in the Af-Pak region, it is the Boko Haram ~ opposed to Western education in translation ~ in Nigeria.”

Seeking for an answer to this, the question is simple and straight: “Is oil wealth a factor why the world leaders have stopped short of ranting at the Nigerian regime”, that was among those who shouted the most at the Paris event but whose silence on the home front was almost deafening?

And, what a superb observation in closing the Editorial: “On a parity of subjective reflection, the West’s argument would suggest that the violence in Nigeria does not capture similar attention because it is part of the history of violence between communities. There can be no differential in the context of a catastrophe. Of course there is far greater clarity in France than in opaque Nigeria. Yet the world must identify the links between annihilation.”

Well, friends, we hope you all will agree in conveying to the learned Chief Editor of the daily our sincere appreciation to the writer of this piece. Some appropriate noise on the subject was much over due, as we humbly feel.

Vandemataram,

Your sevak,

D.C. Nath
