When Sambhaji deceptively made fallen in the hands of Aurangzeb, Dennis Kincaid, a British author, writes : ‘ As imprisoned Sambhaji in all defiance rejected the offer of adopting Islam, he was
savagely made to run inside all around cantonment until his chest ripped apart . Bloodstained, and clothes badly torn to tatters , he was brought before Aurangzeb to be asked again . He again refused to be turned Muslim. His tongue pulled out, and yet again asked to write his will. He wrote, not even in case of Badshah handing over his daughter for his bride to him! Then what , he was killed unleashing upon him far more torture. (Shivaji :The grand rebel) Historians tell that the incident sparked unprecedented unity among Hindus, their hearts flared up in outrage of revenge, and struggle against Mughals transformed into ‘People –war’ . Every Hindu turned a soldier; and every house, a war room. Now the rein of power had come into the hands of Rajaram. Having
made his resort 700 miles away from Raigad into the famous Jinji -fort near Chennai , Rajaram tactically brought the struggle against Mughals down to far south-eastern sea-coast. This vast land having turned into war-front occupied by continuously moving fighting force of common mass led by dedicated local chieftains that Aurangzeb now had to deal with. And, notably, this 700 miles vast stretch of land only got to be the cause Aurangzeb downfall ultimately.
Emulating the ways shown by Shivaji, later Maratha grew into a formidable force. So formidable a force that at one point of time they even forced Aurangzeb to be adopting defensive posture , somehow averting the destiny well visible to him by now. And, frustrated, he even had to propose a truce with Hindu- Marathas. But as of now it was too late; his proposal met with outright rejection by Maratha power. And from this shock of contempt , which could never been expected of by him , he could gain redemption only when death embraced him.
