Anugamanam…Odissi Style Of Dance

The Temple of Fine Arts Penang will be organizing a Anugamanam – In the footsteps of Guruji, is a celebration of the legacy of dance left to us by the late, renowned and legendary personality Guru Sri Kelucharan Mohapatra.

Guru Sri Kelucharan Mohapatra is credited with reviving and propagating the Odissi style of dance worldwide through generations of students trained by him and through whom he lit the spark of this elegant dance form, a spark which has spread from the eastern shores of India throughout the world. This revival has been enhanced further through SRJAN, a premier center of Odissi dance established by Guru Sri Kelucharan Mohapatra in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha in 1993. With Guru Sri Kelucharan Mohapatra’s passing away in 2004, his son Guru Sri Ratikant Mohapatra, has become the torch bearer of SRJAN producing top quality Odissi dancers.

Anugamanam is a unique inaugural collaboration between TFA and Srjan. It is at once the loving gift of a learning journey to students at TFA and at the same time a spellbinding expression of the Odissi art form made possible through talented dancers from Srjan, who unravel a unique style of synchronised ensemble dancing, embellished by tasteful lighting that enhances the overall experience.

Through Anugamanam, TFA is uniquely honoured to offer to the Penang audience Odissi dance at its finest through a repertoire of items based on the ancient scriptures of India that hold true today. It is also importantly the celebration of our rich and ever-living artistic traditions which we are privileged to imbibe, nurture and share with all art lovers.
