Bhagwad Gita has universal relevance: RSS chief

Flag_of_Rashtriya_Swayamsevak_SanghNew Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday underscored the universal relevance of the Bhagwad Gita, saying its message must be spread across the national borders to benefit all communities alike.

In a public address to mark the celebration of 5,151 years of the Bhagwad Gita, Bhagwat urged Indians to share its spiritual wisdom with the world and contribute towards the restoration of balance in society.

“The world has lost its balance that must be restored now. That balance can be found in truth, and that truth is in Gita.”

“And it is the responsibility of us, Indians, to share this spiritual wealth of Gita that we inherited through our saints who ensured to preserve its message by incorporating it in their lives,” he said.

The Bhagwad Gita is a 700-verse Hindu scripture that is part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Its call for selfless action inspired many leaders of the Indian independence movement, including Mahatma Gandhi, who referred to the Gita as his “spiritual dictionary”.

A week-long celebration, Gita Prerna Mahotsav seeks to raise awareness about the Gita as a source of practical inspiration for people in politics, education, business, and other fields.

“The message of Gita is a remedy to the problem that we see in politics and our society today. Its message should serve as a practical inspiration to solve problems in every field,” Swami Gyananand Maharaj, the founder of GEIO Gita, told IANS.

Dec 7 will mark the end of the celebratory week with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah addressing a public gathering at the Red Fort on the occasion.

Former chief justice of India R.C. Lahoti and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal will also be present at the occasion.

At the political level, Swami Gyananand said, the leaders who attend the event must create an environment for promoting the Gita as the voice of humanity.

He said he would like to see the “Gita being accepted in parliament as a guide to advance the goal of national growth”.
